A vintage Dolce and Gabbana dress is thin on the ground..unless you have £4,000 to spend. Prices in certain quarters are truly through the roof. Personally, I wouldn’t spend that much. A Good Frock has a small collection of Dolce & Gabbana vintage dresses. Some very covetable. Prices are sensible. It’s a tiny collection because truly wearable vintage is hard to find.

Properly designer vintage has changed out of all recognition in the last 20 years, so here’s what you need to know before you go looking for Dolce and Gabbana vintage dresses.

What’s designer vintage?

The current thinking is ‘designer vintage’ is 10 years older or more. Not the vintage of the 40’s and 50s. But beware. Just because it should be 10 years older or more does not stop a huge amount of more recent dresses being listed as ‘vintage’. A kind of synonym for second hand. If you can find dresses from the 1990s you are doing well..such as my Dolce and Gabbana bustier/corset dress from Dolce and Gabbana’s 1995 collection. There simply aren’t many around for less than £3,000. Ouch!

What should I pay for a vintage Dolce and Gabbana dress?

Price can be very subjective but should always refer back to the designer, the condition and the age of the dress. Quality designer vintage should withstand the test of time and still be wearable…so much regular non designer vintage from the 40’s and 50’s simply isn’t because it’s inclined to fall apart. I do own a couple of dresses from the 50’s and 60’s (Not D & G obviously) but they are properly couture and are in good condition for their age. Top tip, check the quality of the seams to make sure the dress won’t fall apart when you wear it. But redoing seams can be an easy repair. It depends on the dress.

How designer vintage Dolce and Gabbana dresses shape today’s fashion

Designers like Dolce and Gabbana are well-known for raiding their own design archive for inspiration. But what’s less well known is that some designers raid vintage collections in general for inspiration. Maybe even not designer. There’s an old saying that there is nothing new under the sun and it can be reasonably applied to designer fashion and dresses. That said, Dolce and Gabbana seem to focus on their own archive.

Where to find designer Dolce & Gabbana vintage dresses?

If money wasn’t an object in your search for Dolce and Gabbana vintage dresses I’d say head over to 1stdibs. It’s a lovely site to browse but the prices might make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up! If you are prepared to put the work in (searching) and know your subject, try a site specialising in preloved fashion like Vestaire Collective. You could also try eBay. But I might worry about condition and authenticity. Failing all that, try my small collection of authentic dresses on A Good Frock. My collection is tiny but reasonably priced.
